My Favorite Holiday Videos

December 24, 2013

Here are my two favorite videos making their way around this holiday season.  I honestly can’t get enough of Amy Poehler, and Billy Eichner is climbing the ranks as a new favorite.

This music video featuring the entire female cast of SNL (and written by Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryan, Sarah Schneider, and Chris Kelly) made me laugh out loud multiple times.  There’s some excellent social commentary mixed with family awkwardness mixed with downright goofiness all set to a sexy, catchy tune.

Merry Christmas!

My Favorite New Album

September 9, 2013

Vampire Weekend’s newest album, Modern Vampires of the City, is my favorite album of the year.  I did not expect this to happen given that The National came out with Trouble Will Find Me around the same time.  And yes, I realize The Arcade Fire is coming out with a new album in October that will possibly (hopefully?) blow everything else out of contention, but until October, I cannot stop listening to Vampire Weekend.  The first listen through, “Step” was hands down my favorite song, with the line, “The gloves are off, the wisdom teeth are out” echoing over and over in my head on a train up to Madison, CT.

Then, “Unbelievers” took its place, and I tested my Fender speakers in my new Jetta by blasting “Want a little grace but who’s going to say a little grace for me?” driving home.

Finally, “Hannah Hunt” has been my soundtrack while reacquainting myself with the streets of Minneapolis: “If I can’t trust you, then damn it Hannah, there is no future; there is no answer.”

If you haven’t already, give the album a listen.  I think even those who aren’t usually Vampire Weekend fans will be pleasantly surprised.

I saw The National in December at The Beacon Theatre in NYC.  It was such a great show.  The encore ended with the whole band unplugging, walking to the edge of the stage and singing this song with the crowd.  It was fantastic and magical.  And now I can’t get the song out of my head.  I’ve never enjoyed having a song stuck in my head so much.

Fall

September 16, 2011

Fall got here yesterday.  I went to work in the morning, and it was 71 and a little humid.  When I left work to go to dinner, it was 55 with a chill in the air.  I know Fall is the corniest season to love because everyone loves it, but I really do love it.  And New York has the best Falls.  Fall was always too short in Montana and Minnesota, but here it lingers.  It keeps Winter at bay until it is actually Winter’s turn.  My new banner picture was a picture taken on my actual birthday.  It is clearly still Fall and that was mid-November!

I have feeling that this is going to be an excellent Fall.

Perfect Summer Show

August 5, 2011

This show has been the perfect pitch for me this summer.  It is simultaneously depressing and funny (much like my experience studying for the bar).  Certain moments ring so true that it’s mesmerizing.  Here is the trailer for this season which speaks to the tonality of the entire show.

I really enjoy how this looks.  Especially for the first minute and a half.
