The Boathouse

June 14, 2011

Yesterday was my first day of rowing classes.  I got the classes as a graduation gift from Ryan. I have always wanted to learn to row.  I have crappy knees, so jogging and biking have never been a good way to exercise for me (Yes, I am aware that biking is supposed to be “low impact” compared to jogging, but it bothers my knees too.  I do not know why).  Rowing is perfect.  I know this to be true, despite the fact that I’ve only had one day of class so far, and that we did not go out on the water yet.  We only rowed on the rowing machines (or “ERGs” as Anne, my coach, calls them).  There is actually a lot of terminology that I do not know.  Rowing, apparently has its own secret language, and while I plan on doing a lot of Googling over the weekend to translate, for now, I’m just going to enjoy that twice a week for the next six weeks, I get to go here:

And if that doesn’t make it the perfect way to exercise, I don’t know what does.

Thanks to a blogger over at Splitsider, we now have further proof of Amy Poehler’s brilliance.

I wish the emoticons on my Droid would show up with Amy Poehler’s face after I punch them in instead of that little alien’s face.

Bosswear

April 16, 2011

When I was in 5th grade, I was a know-it-all.  Shocking I know.  But seriously, I was bossy and a bit of a brat.  Granted, even now I like to think that my bossy nature was endearing, but in all likelihood, it was just obnoxious.  My bossiness was well known, and one of my closest friends even bought me this t-shirt:

I believe that my bossy nature has toned down since 5th grade, but I was still very excited when I found out that Tina Fey had titled her first book Bossypants.  “It’s going to be like reading a book about my life,” I thought to myself, “if I was a highly successful forty-something comedian, writer, and TV star.”  And in some ways, I was right.  Tina Fey has maintained a very grounded sense of self that a lot of people can relate to, especially us bossy ones that know our bossiness is one-part determination to succeed and two-parts covering up the fear that everyone will see us for who we really are.

The book is funny and interesting and worth reading.  And maybe one day a friend will see a t-shirt with this picture on it and think it’s the perfect gift for me:

My First Banner Picture

April 14, 2011

This is a shot after Anna and I built a snowman.  I can only guess that my Dad would not let us quit half way through and Anna is pissed about it, despite the job well done.

I love this picture.  But I want to try to keep the blog looking seasonal, so I’m replacing it with this picture:

Anna and I rolling down a hill.  I remember thinking that this looks more fun than it actually is.  It actually hurts.

Li’l Sebastian

April 5, 2011

Parks and Recreation is maintaining its status as one of the greatest shows ever.  One of the greatest plot lines this season has been everyone’s obsession with a miniature horse named Li’l Sebastian.   And now you too can help find Li’l Sebastian:

Procrastinate and enjoy!

This is one of the best things I have ever seen.  Not only is Jimmy Fallon’s Neil Young impression dead on, but the song choice could not be better.  Bravo Late Night, bravo!

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Thom Yorke Dancing

Most of you may have seen this already, but I’m going to post it anyway because I love weird dancing, and Radiohead, and bowler hats.

Park Art

February 23, 2011

One of my favorite things about living in Manhattan is the art installations they do in Madison Square Park.  The summer I moved here, it was treehouses (awesome).  Last summer it was creepy man statutes stationed throughout the park and on stop of surrounding buildings (creepy awesome).  This winter it has been this cool light installation by Jim Campbell called “Scattered Light.”  Check it out:

There is a lot of uproar over a certain Super Bowl ad this year, but I really feel like that commercial is nowhere near as offensive as the one depicted below.  I mean, I cannot believe that this commercial called this woman a red head!  Clearly she is a brunette who added red highlights.  Come on people!

Snow Day!

January 27, 2011

I grew up in Great Falls, Montana.  I went to school there for thirteen years.  It snowed every fall, winter, and spring there for those thirteen years.  From Kindergarten to 12th Grade, I did not get even one snow day.  In college in Minnesota, however, I averaged one snow day a year.  And so far law school in New York has been the same.  Snow days are wasted on the young.  Thankfully, all of mine have happened in my adult life.

This snow day was in March 2006.  Also happened to be Losko’s birthday.

This snow day in February 2007 ended up lasting two days.  We celebrated with a snow ball fight.

This snow day took place in Louisville, Kentucky, in March 2008.  My flight was grounded – bad snow day.  (Also, please note how wimpy the snow is.  Any amount of snow gets you a snow day in the South.)

This is today’s snow day.  Note the lumps on the right side of the street.  Those are completely buried cars.
